Figurative System of Human Knowledge

Zine

2023

The Figurative System of Human Knowledge, also known as the Tree of Diderot and d'Alembert, is a tree-structured system of knowledge. This system was created for the Encyclopédie, published in 1751.

This zine is a trilingual Chinese-English-French comparison reading of the Figurative System of Human Knowledge.  Each section has been separated from the original tree diagram and enlarged to single pages for easier reading.  Additionally, the original explanatory text is included to help understand the classification logic.  Even though the classification system of the Figurative System of Human Knowledge may seem "outdated" today, it was quite innovative in the 18th century.  Through this, we can get a glimpse of European society during the Enlightenment and understand the "advanced" knowledge and perceptions of the world held by Europeans at that time.
