This book is a horizontal research of cod eaten in UK. Reviewing the history and now days data, it demonstrate a trans-temporal territory of British constructed LOCAL. From the fish & chips recipe brought by Jewish migrants to the British long distance fishing industry, the material and relations are interlacing at distance meanwhile forming a map beyond LOCAL.

伦敦华语艺术书展 Outland  Publishing  Fair  

Outland Publishing Fair spotlights art publishing practices from Chinese and diasporic background around the world. Bringing together more than 30 Chinese-speaking publishing practices across various regions, as well as a wide selection of 64 independent entries, the fair aspires to establish a dynamic network that enables translocal and intercultural mobility of Sinophone publications. The inaugural Outland Publishing Fair is taking place on 28–29 September 2024 in London, accompanied by a series of workshops, talks, displays and book launches on- and off-site throughout the month.

Urban Fieldwork: The Foodscape of Peckham

Peckham, in southeast London, became an immigrant hub in the late 20th century, attracting people mainly from the Caribbean (Jamaica, Barbados) and West Africa (Nigeria, Ghana), as well as some from Eastern Europe and South Asia. The streets are lined with shops offering spices, fruits, and dry goods like cassava, fufu, green papaya, and salt cod, alongside restaurants serving dishes such as Jollof rice, Egusi soup, and Pounded yam.

In this event, we will explore Peckham together, observing the selection of ingredients, spatial layout, and signage design of the shops, as well as the behaviors and interactions of shop owners and customers, which will be documented in our field notes. Each participant will also purchase a unique ingredient and share their discoveries during the final discussion.

Measure the Local Food—— Food zine making

Is ‘local food’ an illusion? English tea, fish and chips, Worcestershire sauce… These traditional foods, now localised, have origins and supply chains that cross the world. The dichotomy between the global and the local has become a paradox, as the concept of locality is no longer defined solely by physical distance. Tracing the origins of food has grown increasingly complex, making the lines ever more blurred.

In this workshop, we will explore, deconstruct, and redefine the concept of ‘local food’ through the creation of a food zine. Participants will design their own ‘local food measurements’, reflecting on the nonlinear expansion of the food system.

A Visit of London Ley Line

Ley lines, believed to be ancient energy pathways on Earth, were rediscovered in 1921 by Alfred Watkins in Herefordshire, England. Watkins noticed that landmarks like hilltops, churches, and town halls aligned in straight lines, which he believed were channels for spiritual energy, marked by historical relics. His findings led to widespread interest in mapping these lines. This time, A Visit of London Ley Line will explore The Coronation Line, visiting six of its key landmarks.

On March 20, the aphakia group will make a pop-up appearance at postpost (Xisi store), Beijing, inviting everyone to join a Spring Equinox lucid dream. During the event, we’ll talk about excerpts, about dreams, and create our own dream collages by hand. From halal butchers to Afro-Caribbean grocery stores, each storefront tells a story of movement, adaptation, and belonging. The British Local Fish Cooker is a speculative installation reflecting the paradoxical reality of cod eaten in the UK. Caught in the North Atlantic, cut in China and then eaten in the UK. Global cod supply sustains the beloved local tradition of fish and chips. The cod swims more dead than alive.

This cake is a combination of two kinds of shortcake, which are recorded to be originated in Britain. I used Ruby cake (a cake says to be original in the UK and gained fame in Shanghai) and the Strawberry Shortcake (a cake from the cooking book Virginia Housewife) as a media to discuss the import and export of food along with the cultural identity shift it brought.

Retrace the material flow is a wearable interactive device by which users can re-experience the displacement of the transported goods. The two parts of the device are respectively worn on the object and the user, which are connected by a printed paper tape.
